How does it work?
You speak for 10 minutes and then you will change partners. Don't worry about making the change as someone will be there to help you with it. You should try and speak for 5 minutes in each language. It's up to you to decide how much Italian or English that you speak. Try to be fair and not monopolise one or the other. |
Where is it?
It takes place at mateBar on Via Benedetta 17, Trastevere, Roma. You can find a map of where the bar is here. We even put up a sign. |
When is it?
It starts at 19.30. It finishes between 21.30 and 22.00. |
How much does it cost?
It doesn't cost anything. It is completely free! |
How many times a week is it?
At the moment it is only once a week, on Thursdays. But from March we will be trailing it two times a week - Wednesdays and Thursdays. |
How many people come?
We normally get between 30-50 people. |
What happens if there are too many speakers of one language?
You may get the chance to speak to two people at once. This is great for boosting self-confidence and conversational abilities. However, we will try not to pair you with more than two people. |
Can I come if I am just a beginner?
Of course you can come if you are a beginner. If you are willing to try then that is the most important thing. You might want to bring a pen and some paper with you and have prepared somethings that you would like to learn how to say. |
Can I help out?
You can help out by telling people about us. If you know someone who needs to practice their Italian then you should bring them along. There also maybe possibilities for internships in the future. |
How do the competitions work?
Every participant is given a number when they arrive. Then about 21.00 there is a prize draw. A number generator is used to generate the winning numbers and then the winners are informed. |
I met this really cute guy/girl at the last exchange, can I have their email?
No, no, no, and just incase you missed it - NO! We will not give out any emails or contact details of anyone so please do not bother asking. If someone wants to give you their email then that is up to them. We will not get involved. |
Is Extreme Language Exchange speed dating?
It is true that Extreme Language Exchange has some similarities to speed dating i.e changing partners every 10 minutes, but that is where the similarities end. The idea of the events is to practice languages not to pick up someone for a fling. If two people meet and there is chemistry, that is great. But please do not come to the exchange if you are looking to pick someone up. Word spreads fast and chances are if there are enough complaints then you will be asked to leave. |
What happens if there is someone there who is not being nice?
If someone is not being nice and this could take several different forms - saying inappropriate things, acting in an inappropriate manner, behaviour that is not suitable for polite society, then just have a little word in the hosts ear and they will try and move you from them. If several complaints are received about a specific person then they may be asked to not come back to the exchange. However, this is a last resort and is at the discretion of the host. |
Can I contribute to the competitions?
Sure. We are always looking to help other businesses. Just contact us using the form on the contact page and enter Competitions as a subject. Include in your message details of what you are wanting to do and how it would work with us. |
